Quite different from withheld ejaculation, retarded ejaculation occurs involuntarily and is more often than not a source of distress - certainly, in this case, the individual does not view it as a strength. Although men who suffer from this problem may be fully sexually aroused during intercourse and enjoying the stimulation, a climax seems to take for ever to achieve and may not happen at all.

Sufferers often feel embarrassed, confused, frustrated and carry the conviction that they are in some way 'weird' or 'abnormal'. Not unusually, partners blame themselves and feel inadequate - and that puts even more pressure on the sufferer to perform and compounds the problem further. Occasionally, a partner will believe that it is a deliberate act and that the male is either denying her something that she deserves or is saving himself for somebody else.
