Persistent Arousal Syndrome

This is the modern name for Nymphomania; though it has been the subject of many jokes over the years it is anything but funny for the sufferer. She achieves rapid and profound sexual arousal but is simply unable to find relief even when orgasm is attainable. As the name of the condition implies, she is in a state of 'permanent readiness' and this is often accompanied by all the lack of sexual responsibility that genital arousal brings about in the 'normal' individual. It will usually lead to multiple partners, often of both sexes, and a tendency to pursue anybody who appears sexually able. Masturbation is frequent.

It is likely that it is this condition which is sometimes at the root of sexual addiction or sexual obsession; it rarely responds well to therapy (the individual will automatically resist any lowering of the drive) and fortunately is quite rare.

The Answer
There are not very many ways of resolving this difficulty without spending a long time in therapy - and even then there is no guarantee of improvement. Our own psychosexual therapists provide usually brief therapy and if you are suffering from this condition it is worth at least speaking to one of them - as long as you truly want to be free from the symptom.
